Giving Thanks for Moon Shadows
As I walked down the driveway this morning, I discovered the bright light of the moon (which I followed in its rising yesterday) had watched over me in the night and was guiding me again as it finished its course for this cycle. Tonight it will rise again and peak for the month, the fullest and brightest until the December peak. The moon reminded me of the omnipotence and omnipresent nature of Creation and the Creator. I needed that reminder today.
Life is full of ups and downs, seasons of disorientation and skewed axes. We all have ways of coping, some with prayer, some with addiction, some by lashing out, some with silence. Just as death is an inevitable part of life, so these seasons are inevitable.
In my readings this week, I have followed Cynthia Bourgeault's writings on the mercy of God, particularly that it is "...literally the force that holds everything in existence, the gravitational field in which we live and move and have our being."
In prayer and quiet this morning, I realized that in this season of disorientation in which I find myself, I have been thrown off my "gravitational field" and lost sight of the mercy of God.
But oh my was I caught up short on my little morning walk today...there in the heavens beaming down were the Moon and her shadows reminding me of the impenetrable, immoveable, inimitable Love and Presence of God, Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer...merciful and mighty. I danced in the shadows, gave thanks to the Moon and returned to the house humming this song.
Oh, I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moon shadow, moonshadow--- Leapin and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow---
And if I ever lose my hands, lose my plough, lose my land, Oh if I ever lose my hands, Oh if I won't have to work no more.
And if I ever lose my eyes, if my colours all run dry, Yes if I ever lose my eyes, Oh if I won't have to cry no more.
Oh, I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moon shadow, moonshadow--- Leapin and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow---
And if I ever lose my legs, I won't moan, and I won't beg, Yes if I ever lose my legs, Oh if I won't have to walk no more.
And if I ever lose my mouth, all my teeth, north and south, Yes if I ever lose my mouth, Oh if I won't have to talk...
Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light. Did it take long to find me? And are you gonna stay the night?
Moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow.
