Yeast and Mustard Seeds

Luke 13:18-30 (NRSV)

Jesus said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.” And again he said, “To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”

Coming off of All Saints' Day and the reminder that there are saints here and now as well as there and yesterday, I am reminded that the kingdom of God is now as well as ahead. Planting our metaphorical mustard seeds ensures a tree of life for the "birds of the air" today as well as in heaven.

How is your tree growing and who are your birds?

Likewise the yeast that leavens bread gives a dimension to dough making it rise by metabolizing simple sugars and releasing carbon dioxide and alcohol.

Now for a little tougher question...how is your experience of the kingdom of God like yeast?

I am reminded of Teillard de Chardin's quote

"Remain true to yourself, but move ever upward toward greater consciousness and greater love! At the summit you will find yourselves united with all those who, from every direction, have made the same ascent. For everything that rises must converge."
