Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; 3but anyone who loves God is known by him. 1 Corinthians 8. 1 - 13

The All Saints Sisters of the Poor in Catonsville, Maryland

https://allsaintssisters.org/ live on 90 acres in the rolling hills of Maryland just south of Baltimore where they have lived and prayed since 1917. "As having nothing yet possessing everything" describes their mission on their website. It goes on to say that they treasure:

• Christ centered lives

• interpersonal love and union

• disciplined interior lives centered around the Eucharist and Divine Office

• a spirit of kindness toward one another and strangers

• wearing our traditional habit

• ordinary daily work as the channel of God’s love

The sisters have long run a bookstore where they sell beautiful hand drawn holy cards in support of their ministry. I first learned about the cards 30 or so years ago at a small Episcopal bookstore in Jacksonville and have used them and shared them off and on ever since. One that I remember so well said:

"A known god is no God at all."

This saying made much sense to me, because the grandeur of God was more than I could fathom, and many voices around me were trying to put God in a box that was way too small!

Today's reading from Paul's letter to the Corinthians reminded me of this saying and how essential it is to our belief system. Only in full humility can we stand fully before God; only with awe and wonder and beholding the Mystery can we pursue God. And as Dean Kate said in her meditation today

in that awe and wonder, we discover how much we don't know and so the pursuit continues.

As Albert Einstein said "the more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know."

So it is with God.

ps. Here is another one of my favorite cards from the sisters. I apologize for the blurriness!
