conclave - 1350–1400; Middle English < Medieval Latin, Latin conclāve room, enclosed space, representing ( camera ) cum clāve (room) with key. See con-, clef
In this season of Eastertide as we remember the many appearances of Jesus to the disciples, it is fitting that cardinals of the Roman Catholic church gather behind a locked door to choose their next pope. Imagine how many sightings of the Risen Christ there will be. Whether or not you agree with the Roman Catholic church, this gathering of men is one of great holiness and importance. I believe their papal leader Pope Francis warranted sainthood. In the days since his death, I have found myself thinking about the words of the Centurion at the foot of the cross, "Surely this man is innocent." I have thought, "Surely Pope Francis was a prophet and a saint."
On this day as the conclave begins, the importance of the cardinal's decision seems crucial given the place in time and history in which we find ourselves. Pope Francis' legacy impacted not only the Roman Catholic church but the world with his focus on mercy and compassion, social justice and environmental stewardship. He was a reformer, a compassionate and inclusive leader and a loving human. His Easter address, read the day before he died, included the following words about what it means to be Easter people:
Love has triumphed over hatred, light over darkness and truth over falsehood. Forgiveness has triumphed over revenge.
...such important words for our aching and broken world.
and towards the end of the address, he said:
May the principle of humanity never fail to be the hallmark of our daily actions. In the face of the cruelty of conflicts that involve defenseless civilians and attack schools, hospitals and
humanitarian workers, we cannot allow ourselves to forget that it is not targets that are struck, but persons, each possessed of a soul and human dignity.
It is imperative to pray without ceasing as this conclave meets, that the Risen Christ might appear in the hearts and minds of the holy men who have the great honor of electing a replacement for beloved Pope Francis.
The prayer below is one being used by the Catholic church and perhaps we might join them in their plea for wisdom and holiness for the cardinals to elect the next Vicar of Christ.
Holy Spirit, enlighten the Church at this time, especially all the cardinals you call to take part in the conclave. Grant them wisdom and holiness so that all may cooperate with your inspiration
and guidance to elect the next Vicar of Christ, your chosen servant. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
