Wildernesses are crucibles where we become the people who can live into new lands of promise and liberation.
—Liza Rankow
From etymonline we learn that in the early 15c., crusible meant a "vessel or melting pot for chemical purposes, so tempered as to endure extreme. And in Latin the word crux means a cross. Since the 1640s it has been used figuratively to mean any severe test or trial.
My question for us today is what is the crucible of our wilderness this Lent? What is testing us, shaping and forming us into a stronger version of who we are? What are we becoming, do we long to become, is God calling us to become. And ultimately what are the new lands of promise and liberation on our horizons?
"If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."
What are our crosses, and how do we follow Jesus?
