Fast from, Feast on

Is not this the fast that I choose:to loose the bonds of injustice,to undo the thongs of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Isaiah 58. 1 - 9a
As we come to the end of Epiphany and the first season of ordinary time in our liturgical year, it is time to start thinking about Lent, the penitential season of fasting and abstinence from whatever has led us astray from the way of Christ. Fasting has often implied giving up something you enjoy so you will feel deprived and be reminded that the love of God is all you need. However, it seems there is a lot more to the way of Christ than just remembering God's love. This fasting/feasting pairing struck me as a lovely way to be in full relationship with the way of Christ and "to tend to our disordered manners of being and develop healthy new habits as we seek to live more faithfully as people of God," as Victoria Emily Jones said in her Art and Theology blog today.
May these words sustain us as we begin our Lenten journeys and draw us closer and closer to the Light of the World.
Fast from the swelling darkness,
Feast on the power of God's light
Fast from discontentment,
Feast on the joy that God brings
Sustainer, Protector, the Well of Life!
My Helper, My comfort, the bread of life
Is you-oo-ooo
Is you-oo-ooo!
Fast from the fear that haunts us,
Feast on the power of God's might!
Fast from the trap of judgment,
Feast on all that's been redeemed
From the sorrow's shadow to perfect light
From the darkness of our doubt to a cleansing white
From the sorrow's shadow to perfect light
From the blindness of our sin to healing sight
