Fret Not

Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; *do not be jealous of those who do wrong. Psalm 37

Psalm 37 appointed for today begins with the line above. The title for this psalm is Noli aemulari which means "do not emulate" or "fret not" in Latin. The Hebrew word for fret in this usage is Charah (חָרָה) which means a "burning" emotion, often referring to becoming vexed, chafed, or irritated.

That little word fret was often used in my household when we were told not to fret if things didn't go our way or, in my case, if we were worried. Neither here nor there, I find the usage of this little word a bit anachronistic because it seems too modern for the psalms. Nonetheless, I appreciate being told not to fret because it is a terrible habit and a result of not trusting all will be well. Simple though it may be, let's take on not fretting as our Thursday Lenten discipline. Like Mikey in the Life cereal commercial don't fret just "try it, you'll like it!"
