The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:1,13-25

In his letter to the people in Galatia, Paul tells us today how to inherit the kingdom of heaven

(and how not to!). The works of the flesh will stand between us and the kingdom, he says, but the fruits of the Spirit will show that we are guided by the Spirit and will lead us into the kingdom. Now what in the world do you think that means? I am reminded that Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is now," so that when we practice these fruits of the Spirit we are experiencing the joy of the kingdom here and to come.

So perhaps we might ponder where and how we could practice each of these fruits this week, noting as we do what glimpses of the kingdom of heaven we receive. We also might note which one of the fruits we need to work hardest on...for me it will be patience and self-control...what about you?

Here is a prayer for Fruit!

Gracious God, we thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit, and for the promise of the fruits that come from walking in the Spirit.

We ask that you would fill us with your love, that we may extend that love to all those we encounter. Grant us joy, even in the midst of trials, and help us to be a source of peace in a world that is often filled with conflict.

Give us patience, especially when we are quick to judge or become frustrated.

Fill us with your kindness and goodness, that we may be a blessing to others.

Help us to be faithful in our commitments, gentle in our interactions, and to exercise self-control in all areas of our lives.

We ask for your guidance, that we may grow in these virtues, and that our lives may be a reflection of your grace. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

I've got my work cut out for me this week!
