Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening. 1 Samuel 3. 19 - 20
The story of Samuel and Eli at the beginning of 1 Samuel has always interested me, particularly when I am pondering the Trinity, God three in one, Creator,Redeemer, Sustainer. What or who was it that called Samuel? Not the incarnate God - Jesus Redeemer and probably not God Creator, but I do believe it was the Holy Spirit, God the Sustainer, God moving among us.
In the wee cobwebby hours of the morning today, I sensed the presence of my great niece Evie whom I hardly know but whose mother is a beloved niece and friend. Per her mother, Evie is a rascally precocious little girl with a heart of gold. I choose to believe that this sensing was the movement of the Holy Spirit, placing Evie on my heart in a special way so that I could reach out to her and/or her mother and pray for her.
Have you heard God calling your name? Have you sensed a presence other than yourself putting a face or a thought or a calling on your heart. Do you hear God calling in the wind or in the eyes of a child or calling you to reach out a hand to someone? What is your perception of the Holy Spirit? Give it flesh and describe it. And when "she" calls, be sure to say, "Speak, for your servant is listening." I hope you have a vision as precious as the one I had this morning.
