Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; ~Collect appointed for the Sunday closest to August 31st.
Grafting is a horticultural technique where tissues of plants are joined so they can continue their growth together. It also refers to a surgical procedure in the heart where a healthy blood vessel (graft) is used to bypass a blocked or narrowed coronary artery in the heart.
As usual, the imagery in our prayers and in scripture ties deeply with the natural world and the human body. So I take it a step further...where in our hearts do we need a graft? What could we be grafted with to bypass any blockage in our hearts? And even, what is that blockage? Think forgiveness, reconciliation, restoration.
As we go out into the world this morning, may we find ways to graft in our hearts the Love of God. May we come to terms with whatever blocks those ways, and may we affix ourselves and our souls to what is healthy and life giving.
Amen.
