Holy Cross Day

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross that he might draw the whole world to himself: Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the mystery of our redemption, may have grace to take up our cross and follow him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

On this day in the church year, we celebrate the Cross as a symbol of salvation, victory over death and the promise of life eternal. The Collect appointed for today (above) prays that we who honor the mystery of our redemption will take up our cross and follow the One who drew the whole world to himself upon it.

I value the word mystery in this prayer, because it was an unfathomable act for which we can never fully give thanks. The hymn below has been a favorite since I was a child. It lifts me internally in a mysterious way, reminding me I can never stop giving thanks for the inexplicably unconditional love of God and the peace that passes all understanding.
