How long do we wait?

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying,  “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.”  But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.”  Then Isaiah[a] said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son and shall name him Immanuel.[b] Isaiah 7. 10 - 17

In the passage above, the prophet gives King Ahaz the sign of Immanuel. Like children who cannot wait for Christmas Day, "this passage for Christians reveals God who plays the long game. Consider the eons that passed before the coming of Christ. For over 13 billion years, God is able to wait for this coming!!!" In these words from the pray as you go app, we hear about a waiting time unfathomable to us as humans...but not to God.

How long do we wait? How long must we wait? What experience do you have of waiting? In the Song of Songs meditation this morning, the pray as you go folks liken our waiting to waiting for your beloved...asking "Have you ever thought of God as your beloved?" and "How does that sit with you?"

As the days eek out a little more light beginning this day, the winter solstice, so perhaps our wait gets a little shorter. The gloriously impossible beloved is coming closer, God come to be one of us!
