i thank you, God...

...let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55. 6 - 13

We have a reprieve today in the Isaiah readings discussed in The Advent Project we have been following! We move into 3rd Isaiah which is clearly a different prophet voice. And the message is one of hope and peace. In Isaiah 55, it goes on to say,

"For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace; the mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands."

The writer goes on to compare this passage to the inimitable e.e.cummings and his delightful poem:

“i thank you God for most this amazing day”

i thank You God for most this amazing

day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees

and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything

which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,

and this is the sun’s birthday; this is the birth

day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay

great happening illimitably earth)how should tasting touching hearing seeing

breathing any—lifted from the no

of all nothing—human merely being

doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and

now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

Read it aloud and let it begin your day with a "whoopee, I am alive and all will be well!" And then listen to this beautiful Sufjan Stevens song, "All the Trees of the Field." May you enjoy a reprieve of a day, reminded of God's abundant pardon and the joy of Creation.

If I am alive this time next year.

Will I have arrived in time to share?

And mine is about as good this far,

And I'm still applied to what you are

And I am joining all my thoughts to you

And I'm preparing every part for you

And I heard from the trees a great parade

And I heard from the hills a band was made

And will I be invited to the sound?

And will I be a part of what you've made?

And I am throwing all my thoughts away

And I'm destroying every bet I've made

And I am joining all my thoughts to you

And I'm preparing every part for you
