If I do not have Love...
If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast,* but do not have love, I gain nothing.
1 Corinthians 12. 27 - 13.3
The New Testament lesson appointed for today is a great favorite, read at weddings and funerals as a testimony to the essential presence of Love in life. As I read it this morning, I noticed the alternatives the writer gives to life without Love. He says regardless of our accomplishments, our powers, our knowledge, our possessions, without Love we are nothing, we have nothing, and we are like a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
I found this little video clip which is a charming explanation of this verse from 1 Corinthians. Watch it carefully, and notice where the clanging cymbals show up all around the community...a good reminder of places we could show up in Love.
