Nine Months
In a time of destruction, create something: a poem, a parade, a community, a school, a vow, a moral principle; one peaceful moment.
MAXINE HONG KINGSTON
Nine months is generally associated with the length of human gestation, the time it takes for an embryo to develop into a baby and be born. It occurred to me today that as the month turns over to November, many of us will have been living in pandemic mode for nine months. In many ways, this has been a time of destruction, not a time of creation as a human pregnancy is, and yet could we refocus ourselves to think of it as a time of creation? What have we created during this time? What are we preparing to give birth to after nine months of seclusion/quarantine/fear/confusion? And taking it further, what will we have to show for this nine months that we will need to tend and nurture and raise up to contribute to the beloved community of which we are a part?
Just a thought for today to give us a peaceful moment.
