Pass the Salt!

You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.' Matthew 5. 13 - 20

As an empty nester, but with much energy still left, my mother started writing to a prisoner who was an author for Forward Day by Day meditations. Bo Cox was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder, but his reflections on his spiritual journey in the Oklahoma State Prison were picked up by Forward, and he wrote inspirational and down - to- earth meditations for them for nearly 20 years.

One of my favorite entries of his, which can also be found in his book I Will with God's Help, published after he was released from prison, is called Pass the Salt, based on this verse from Matthew appointed for today.

Bo's saltiness was restored, and he shared it in so many ways in his writing and his ministry after he was released from prison in 2003. He led therapeutic activities at a psychiatric hospital and served as a consultant to St. Alban's School in Washington, D.C. He also joined a group of us at a Christian Formation Conference at Kanuga Camp and Conference Center in 2005 to lead a session on Faith, Freedom and Formation.

An article in the July 27 2003 edition of The Living Church tells more about Bo, announcing his sudden release from prison and his plans for the future. I have attached the link here, and the article is on page 25.

I have lost touch with Bo, but when I read this passage I always think of him, as well as the way he addressed my mother..."Owene, rhymes with green!"

Let's pass the salt, my friends, and be the salt of the earth.
