Slaves of Righteousness?

Do you not know that, if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

Romans 6. 15 - 23

In my childlike mind, I used to think that there was no way I could thank God enough for the gift of unconditional love, thus the rest of my life needed to be spent giving thanks. And when I failed to be grateful and live accordingly, I chastised myself and tried and tried again. Only recently have I begun to grasp the dominion God has over me by loving me. As St. Paul says in Romans above, we are slaves either of sin or of obedience which leads to righteousness.

This morning the word slave caught my attention...bound by ownership, one who is forced to work for and obey another and is considered to be their property. I have no choice but to be grateful, no choice but to choose love, no choice but to do everything in my power to be an instrument of righteousness. Someone recently asked me what my reaction was to the invitation to become a slave of righteousness? I suppose the best response would be, "I will with God's help."
