The Gift and Heritage of Children

Bestow on them, if it is your will, the gift and heritage of

children, and the grace to bring them up to know you, to love you,

and to serve you. Amen.

I had the great privilege to read prayers for the bride and groom at a beautiful wedding service this weekend. I have known the bride since she was two. As I read the prayer above, I reflected on how her mother had the grace to bring her up to know and love God and how we as parents and grandparents have tried to do the same with out children.

I also thought about how difficult it is in these days and times to get our children and grandchildren to church proper...Sunday mornings just don't work for working families with children. However, there are many other ways to bring children up to know, love and serve God. Teaching them to love neighbor as self...all neighbors, all races, creeds and colors! Also telling the stories from the Bible by applying them to our lives today gets the message across without having it sound preachy. Finally spreading the love of God through song is the catchiest way to instill the Message in children. I was reminded of that when a dear friend sent the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's rendition of Peace Like a River recently. This version would not be so good for 3 and 4 year olds. But tomorrow I will use the version below, and I know for a fact it catches their attention and they don't forget it!
