The Majesty and Glory of your Name

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, *
the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,
What is man that you should be mindful of him? *
the son of man that you should seek him out?
You have made him but little lower than the angels; *
you adorn him with glory and honor; Psalm 8
Father James Martin, American Jesuit priest and writer, quoted this psalm recently in his description of the splendor of the pictures from the Artemis II crew as they travelled farther from earth than anyone has ever gone. On this day as the crew prepares for its return to earth, isn't it fitting that this psalm is appointed.
Many years ago in a little church in Orange Park, Florida a small group of parishioners supported by a couple of paid singers with an accomplished cellist as their organist and a professional singer as their choir director worked hard to learn this beautiful song, and it became their standard offering during Easter. This humble choir member will never forget how accomplished we felt to offer this beautiful piece. Certainly today as the crew of the Integrity roars back into the earth's orbit, it is fitting to remember these words, giving thanks for the Majesty and Glory of God.
To make the Artemis II mission all the more memorable, the team's pilot offered this prayer/sermon on Easter Sunday.
“As we get close to the nearest point to the moon and farthest point from Earth, as we continue to unlock the mysteries of the cosmos, I would like to remind you of one of the most important mysteries there on Earth, and that’s love,” said astronaut Victor Glover, pilot of the Artemis II mission, speaking to ground control April 6 from aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft Integrity.
“Christ said, in response to what was the greatest command, that it was to love God with all you are,” said Glover. “And he also, being a great teacher, said the second is equal to it. And that is to love your neighbor as yourself.”
In the midst of the chaos of our world, let us not forget the handiwork of God and God's great commandment, all the while celebrating the Majesty and Glory of God's name. Travelling mercies to the Artemis crew as they prepare for their fireball entry and the end of their historic mission.
