Is Christianity in Crisis or Transition? by Ilia Delio
The prominent Indian leader, Mahatma Gandhi, said that “Christianity is a great idea but it has yet to be tried.” He further quipped, “I would be a Christian, if it were not for the Christians.” Only someone outside Christianity could read the New Testament without bias then look around the Church and realize, “something is really off here.” A Christianity that promises to protect us from the world cannot help us learn to live responsibly within it. A faith that sees nature as merely the stage for human salvation cannot inspire the ecological conversion our planetary crisis demands. A religion that is primarily therapeutic cannot provide the prophetic voice that challenges the systems of domination and exploitation destroying the earth.
Just took a twenty minute video of the sun coming up through some pines that I planted (and they agreed to grow, showing me it's possible, if not probable or even absolute) twenty years ago and are so tall now that it hurts my neck to look at the top.
The crows are yelling now and I swear they're scolding me for ever looking elsewhere for the Source...I do not find it in the Bible any longer; too pock-marked and scarred with the shrapnel of inconsistency from the artillery and other toys of the patriarchal-minded.
Watching real-time, evil-hearted men leaving their fingerprints on it these days is at best scary and leaves me looking beneath anything they've offered thus far.
It's no indictment, nor should it be, of those with whom I've shared this book and found comfort and solace together on our respective and collective jorneys that I move on with some sadness but not really. Nor, however, is it an indictment of the book, merely on the face of it being an incredible work of literature but if we're to continue to try and canonize the absurdity being written on its pages today in the blood of today's "unbelievers," then I can no longer participate on simply a face-value level and, truly, if our relationship with our Creator can't be face value and authentic, what can?
There you go...first post-facebook-where-is-this-going- communication with the outside world!
Oh, and we got chickens!
