Where there is love, there is God.
‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you; Jeremiah 1. 4
In one of the readings appointed for today, the prophet Jeremiah (650-570 BC) tells that God has come to him with the words above, anointing Jeremiah's lips with his fingers, and sending him out to spread the message...I was with you before your beginning. I find great comfort in these words, as I do in the words of Psalm 139 (1500 - 537BC)...
Where can I go from your spirit?
Or where can I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there;
if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
If I take the wings of the morning
and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me fast.
Since the beginning, the people of God have believed that God laid God's hand on each of us even before we were formed. I am not sure we spend enough time embracing that truth. At this time, when so many people are suffering, either with grief or pain or fear or addiction, I long to share this message reminding us all that God has gone before us to hold us in this suffering. Where there is love, there is God. Let us go forth in Love.
