Water into Wine
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2. 1 - 12
Imagine being Mary at this wedding. We know Jesus is about 30, so she has known for a good long time that she has a very unusual son. We can only imagine what she has seen and heard him say and do, because we have almost no record of his life except when he was missing at age 12 on the trip to the festival in Jerusalem. There is a voice of consent in Mary's comment in this passage, a voice that implies she knows he has an answer, she knows he has a plan, she knows he is good, very very good. We might say he has been a bit rude to her with the comment, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” But she is not deterred. It is as though after that comment, she remembers...oh yes, this is God's son in whom God is well pleased...and so she says, "Do whatever he tells you."
Maybe that is a good line for today...do whatever Jesus tells me. Change my life like water into wine!
