Harry T. Burleigh and Antonin Dvorak
Today in our cycle of prayer called Holy Women, Holy Men, we remember Harry T. Burleigh.
This little video from Daily Office (see link below) explains beautifully who Harry Burleigh was and why he is being remembered.
I was particularly interested in this piece because of Burleigh's connection with Antonin Dvorak. I never understood how the great Czech composer happened to have pieces like "Going Home" in his New World Symphony that sounded so much like African American spirituals.
So much to give thanks for that Mr. Burleigh and Mr. Dvorak found each other and as a result we have the New World Symphony...I look forward to living into that "new world" as we embrace more and more the multiculturalness of who we are as people of God.
God our strong deliverer, we bless your Name for the gifts of grace given to Harry Thacker Burleigh to gather and preserve the good heritage of African-American music and to lift up in song the struggles of his people. Let that Spirit of love which spurred him draw us also to join hands throughout the earth in Christ’s one great fellowship of love; through the same Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
