Tune our spirits, Lord.
Tune our spirits, Lord: to sing out with the sky.
This line across the top of my Sacred Ordinary Days journal this morning struck me. How are our spirits tuned?
According to the great cyberspace encyclopedia Wikipedia:
Piano tuning is the act of adjusting the tension of the strings of an acoustic piano so that the musical intervals between strings are in tune. The meaning of the term 'in tune', in the context of piano tuning, is not simply a particular fixed set of pitches. Fine piano tuning requires an assessment of the vibration interaction among notes, which is different for every piano, thus in practice requiring slightly different pitches from any theoretical standard. Pianos are usually tuned to a modified version of the system called equal temperament.
This is a rich description we could very easily interpret in our spiritual lives.
For example:
The strings of the piano might be compared to the threads of our lives which connect us to the world and our stories. When those threads have become unraveled or disconnected, our voices are lost and/or misunderstood. Adjusting that tension and reconnecting the intervals restores the "tune" of our lives.
And...if each of us is a string making a note, then the "vibration interaction among the notes" must be assessed and kept in pitch so that we can make music for the world...so that we can "sing out with the sky." Our ears will be opened, our hearts will be opened, we will have an equal temperament, and we will hear and know God.
This comparison/metaphor might be a bit of a stretch for you., but what would you say "tuning our spirits" means. Something to think about.
