Simeon's Epiphany
Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,
"Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel." Luke 2. 22-40
Simeon was an old man who had heard God say to him you will not die until you have seen the Messiah. Led by the Holy Spirit, Simeon came to the temple the day of the presentation of Jesus and when he saw the Child, he knew...this was the Messiah. Immediately, he knew that God's will had been fulfilled, and he had seen God's salvation which was a Light for all people, the Gentiles and God's people Israel.
Somewhat like the wise men, Simeon left the temple that day by another way...knowing that he had answered God's call to witness the Messiah and now he could depart in peace. "Nunc Dimittis," as the song of Simeon is called, means now you let depart, and so he went on his way filled with the glory of God.
Where have you had an epiphany this week... an aha that changed the trajectory of your journey...one that left you with peace that passed all understanding?
